Was it destiny?!

 Destiny!

1996 April I became self employed by starting Manhunt Consultants, a Recruitment Consultancy. As I couldn’t get a job when I wanted one, I got into the business of finding jobs for others! And the very fact that after 27 years I’m still running it proves that I was successful in that!

Well to get back to the main story (!) just 4 months later I heard that a new MNC was recruiting large number of staff at all levels and especially in Sales and Marketing as they have to start operations.

I had 15 of sales and marketing experience in FMCG industry prior to becoming self employed.

As I became self employed out of compulsion and not because I wanted to, I sent in my resume to them and was promptly called for an interview.

On the interview day I got out of my office (which was bang in the center of Ameerpet X Roads) at 10-45 AM to attend the interview at 11 AM in Grand Kakatiya Hotel where the MNC took one whole floor to kick start their operations.

As I took my bike off stand, I realized that I had a flat and got panicky! In those days there were fewer Autos and 2/3 came but with passengers and my panic level went up by few notches! An empty Auto appeared but when I told him the destination which is just about 1 KM he refused and drove off. Panic was touching 10!

Then saw another empty auto coming and I just stood in its way and when he stopped sat in the back seat and told him to go to Grand Kakatiya and as he was about to protest told him I would pay Rs.25 which was a huge amount back then! He agreed and I reached the hotel at 11.

I found out their floor which was 13th (bad omen?!) and wondering that I couldn’t see that many floors from outside got into the lift and realized that the floor numbers started from 10!

And as I got out of the lift saw a Foreigner and I just murmured “Arun, Interview etc.,” He looked at his watch and said “Mr. Arun you are supposed to meet me at 11 AM. 11 is 11 NOT 11-05! Sorry I can’t see you”

Crestfallen I walked out in slow motion and I don’t remember how I reached my office.

Was it destiny that caused the puncture and redirected my life totally in another direction?

Sometimes I wonder how my life would’ve been if only I got into that company!

PS: I have neither applied for jobs nor got any interview calls thereafter!

Controlled road rage!

Guess this incident which happened sometime last year can be termed as “controlled road rage!! It can also be described as “passive-aggressive” thing :P

One morning I was driving my car in peak hour in Balanagar area in Hyderabad in the lane adjacent to the median and about 300 meters ahead there is a signal where I had to go straight. I was looking for a gap in my left lane to get into that lane so that I won’t be blocked by the people turning right at the signal ahead.

There was a small gap next to my car and I just turned my steering by about 10° and there suddenly appeared two guys on a bike next to my front left tire! My car didn’t even touch their bike but they started to hurl abuses at me (though I couldn’t hear properly as my windows were up with the AC on, I could make out they weren’t making decent comments! ) and while getting ahead they even made an offensive sign with their middle finger! That really made me lose my patience but there was little I could do as they sped away and I couldn’t even open my car door as there was just no space :D

So I was cursing them under my breath, what else I could do?! After a couple of minutes of bumper to bumper traffic I forgot all about it and moved on.

As I reached the signal I was crawling ahead due to the peak hour traffic and suddenly to my surprise and amusement I found the bike next to my window as they stopped to take a right turn there. (There was a green signal for the traffic going straight only!)

I immediately rolled down my window and those 2 guys also saw me and removed their helmets (interestingly both of them were wearing helmets which is a very rare thing in India!) expecting to hear me shout back at them.

To their utter shock I simply said in a nonchalant tone “That language you’ve used there (pointing backwards with my hand) please practice it at home so that you will get better!” Saying that I simply drove off!

You should’ve seen their faces :P

Script for 30 sec film "Wear helmet"!!

Here's a script for a 30 seconds short film advocating bike riders to wear helmet!!

Madhu is about to start his bike  in his apartment parking. Another  flat mate who was also about to start his bike (and wearing a helmet) tells Madhu "Sir you forgot your helmet".

Madhu says "Thanks! I forgot" and calls his wife on his mobile "I forgot helmet. Please send it with Geeta"

Wife replies "She is already late for school and is yet to have her breakfast. Anyway you are going only up to the main road Na? Its okay. Go without helmet"

Next scene: Madhu's garlanded photo on table with a helmet on top!!

Voice over: Distance matters not. For wearing a helmet.

Telugu version:

Real funny incident!

Ending the last week of the year with a real incident for a change ;)

One of my friend who is also a recruitment consultant lives very near my home. Whenever he gets a cheque from clients, which is very frequently(!), he drags me along to his bank at Paradise and the tacit agreement is that he had to offer me samosa/curry puff with tea at Paradise restaurant in exchange for my entertaining company ;)

Few months ago on one such trip we were crossing the Paradise cross roads on foot (he parks his car in the bank's compound) and when we were few feet away from the other side suddenly a lady on an Activa was hit by a bike and she fell at my feet, literally and the scooter fell on the opposite side! Apparently both of them tried to jump the signal and hence the mishap happened, am not sure how it happened, as in most cases they happen in a jiffy!

She fell just 6” from me and the following thoughts/questions crossed through my mind in the next 2.5 seconds, needless to say at the speed of thought ;)
She is looking heavy!! As does the scooter :(
Should I risk lifting her?...considering my age and her weight :(
Scooter fell on the opposite side and hence difficult to lift from my side!
Whom should I lift first(!)? She or scooter? As if I'm going to do both!
Scooter can't get up on its own!
But she isn't injured at all and can get up on her own unlike the scooter!

In the meantime..I mean after 2.5 seconds a guy appeared from nowhere/ somewhere and lifted the scooter by which time the lady was getting up on her own having come to a firm conclusion that I'm not going to be doing any heroic help :(  How can I..being an aging hero; I don't have the facility of dupes like the ones in the films :(

Needless to say my friend was a mute spectator to the entire happening!!

And after pulling herself up she sat on the scooter, started it and sped away but not before looking back and giving a mysterious smile! I felt that her smile was just like Draupadi's after seeeing Duryodhana in Maya Sabha :(

Start the last week of the year with a big loud laugh and #HaveAGreatWorkingWeek

Unveling an hitherto unknown dimension of my life!!

This IS a long post! Read on to know an unknown facet of my life!

Exactly 35 years ago! 22nd September, 1980 evening around 8 PM. ....flashback!! Am posting this almost exactly to the minute;)

Unveiling a hitherto little known fact of my life!!

On that day, I was eagerly awaiting in Sri Venkateswara Vignana Mandir, Guntur, one among many hopefuls, waiting for the announcement of names of Winners!!

Cut to 1 day before. I've participated in the Grand Scooter Endurance Rally organized by Rotary Club of Guntur on the previous day. It was about 100 K.M.s starting from the Parade Grounds, Guntur and going to Managalagiri onward to Tenali and back, a triangular route. I didn't know, as are the others, anything about motor rallies till then! We all participated in the briefing one day before and all I could understand was that to win we have to maintain the given timings in the given sections! It was a Time, Speed, Distance rally and I had a Priya scooter (well my dad bought it and I was in my final semester of MBA!). I've successfully completed the rally and there were no navigators! Only the rider has to check the TSD charts and maintain those speeds. Of course very safe speeds were given and the most painful part is that we've to actually maintain very low speeds for longer periods! That's why it was called Grand Endurance Rally!!

Next day evening all of us gathered in the huge auditorium and it was the concluding function of their Youth Activities Week celebrations and lots of participants of other games, contests etc., as well as all the members of the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs were there numbering 500+ people in the auditorium! I waited for the announcement of results of our Rally but to my disappointment they announced in the beginning  of the meeting itself that the tabulation of results is still going on and the results will be announced as soon as they were ready!

I wasn't expecting any prize as it was the very first Rally I've participated. But was there just out of curiosity and perhaps with a faint hope! Finally around 8 PM they started announcing the top 3 prizes of the Rally. First prize winner announced! It wasn't my name :( Ditto with the second prize!! And out of the blue I heard my name being announced as the Third prize winner!!

Wow! It was music to my ears and an unbelievable experience, receiving the prize from a dignitary in front of some 100's of people!

(It was the 2nd time for me to receive a prize, first time was in my 7th class when I got a prize for “Best actor” (!) or some such thing for a doctor's role I've played in the school anniversary! I got a soap box as prize for that, a prized possession in those days ;) )

Well another unexpected bonus that evening was an over excited Rotary club member suddenly announced cash prizes to all the winners of the rally!! And I don't exactly remember but I think  it was either Rs.500 or Rs.1,000 which was a HUGE amount in those days!

Am posting the photos of the function and try to identify me ;) Yes! I was THAT thin in those days :(

And I walked err floated in the air and reached home and after showing off my shield to my family immediately rushed to my friends cum classmates room which was just 200 yards from my home and shared that joy with all of them. Next day I showed it off in my University and boasted that I missed the 2nd prize as I wasn't wearing the helmet ;)

That win in the very first Rally got me hooked to motor rallies and after coming to Hyderabad few years later I joined Andhra Pradesh Motor Sports Club (APMSC) and started participating in their Club Rallies for amateurs. Since I had no money to modify my bike to participate in the bigger events I've confined myself to the club events as well as “Treasure Hunts” (fun family events which involve solving clues and visiting those spots) organized by the club.

In one of the rallies I drove my brand new Ind Suzuki motorcycle at speeds of around 100 KMPH in the competitive segments which typically run through the hinterland through villages and all of you should be knowing the condition of rural roads 35 years ago. And in the TSD rallies higher speeds are given in the hinterland and speeds of 20 KMPH are given in the city!! First time I've experienced riding a bike an inch or two above the ground, it was literally flying!! Unfortunately motor rallies aren't exactly a spectator sport and doesn't have much following in India back then at least.

I still remember in one of the rallies I ran out of petrol about 30 K.M.s from Hyderabad and  if I remember correctly it was somewhere in the Vikarabad area. And our only option was to go back about 10 K.M.s to a village which we crossed and where we saw a guy selling petrol in barrels! But how to travel 10 K.M.s and that too on that road with lots of steep gradients?! We stopped a villager on a bike and my brother pillion rode on his bike holding my left hand and dragging me and my bike all along! At some points I literally cried in pain especially while he was pulling me up the steep gradients, literally an uphill task. I've a suspicion that my left hand must've grown at least half an inch longer that day!! In the same rally I distinctly remember another rider NTR as he was called (N Tirumal Roy) had a flat tire but he cut off the tube and tire and completed the last leg of the rally riding on the rim!! Oh Boy!! That was what you call guts. He later became famous in the rally circuit.

As I was unable to participate in the bigger events, to satiate my appetite for rallying, I started thinking out of the box (yes I used to think out of the box even as a student, though that term was coined much later!) and used to volunteer for the Time Check controls  for the Charminar Challenge Rally one of the prestigious events of APMSC in those days! I along with 2/3 other friends used to man one of the Time Control check points and it was an unbelievable experience, sitting in the Narsapur forests in the night and waiting for the very first car to drive in. And the rush of adrenaline even as a Time Keeper when those cars zoomed in was to be experienced. I used to enjoy that experience thoroughly. Later on as I became older I somehow lost interest in mid 90's.

Well, now you “know” that hitherto unknown dimension of my life ;)
