Prologue:
Few weeks ago I met a person who disappeared from my scene more than a decade ago. Apparently he went off to USA and even got a citizenship there.
We met over lunch and as he was telling me his life in the past 15 years I suddenly asked him "After being in USA for so many years how come you don't drink?!"
He replied very seriously "I'll never touch it Sir"
I asked "Why"
He said "When I was young once I had a drink too many and apparently I created a big scene at home using unparliamentary language! Fortunately for me my family recorded my "drunken rantings" in an audio tape and next day my mom gave it to me to listen! When I heard myself next morning I was ashamed of myself for the language I used and my behavior and couldn't face my family! Then and there I've decided that I will never touch alcohol again and that's the reason why I don't drink in spite of living in USA and visiting 49 countries on official work"
OUT OF BOX IDEA:
I kept thinking about what he said for days as I know of quite a few "Drunkards" in the families of my circle of friends/ relatives/ acquaintances... by drunkard I mean men who drink DAILY and once drunk they do "Bharatanatyam/ kathakali etc., some even beat their wife and kids regularly, more often don't have a job/don't earn money and live off on their spouse's income"
While deliberating on my friend's experience an idea stuck me.
How about video taping (without their knowledge) the drunkards evening scene (now that everyone has a mobile with camera) and showing it to them the next morning? I also know for a fact that most of the drunkards are very caring when sober! (Don't know whether they are acting)
But assuming any normal person when they are sober does care for others especially their family does showing a video of them beating their wife, kids or generally creating a big scene work? Does it make them change? Do you think it can work? Or are there any hidden dangers in this type of "treatment"?
I would love to know your thoughts.
